Popeye The Sailor Man (Paramount, 1934). Stock Poster (42" X 62").In the early 1930s, Max and Dave Fleischer, the brother team that had built Paramount's cartoon output with the likes of Betty Boop and their animated Screen Song series, decided they needed another boost in their stock of players, and introduced the world to Popeye. He would remain their top seller until the brothers were forced out of business by Paramount in the early 1940s. Paramount picked up the series and produced Popeye shorts until 1957. This stock poster from Popeye's early days is a sensational find for animation collectors, as it is the first one Heritage has presented, and most likely won't be soon seen again. Beloved Popeye winds up, donning his signature hat and pipe, all in impressively bright color. The poster has been paperbacked and touchup applied to a tear in the top border that extends down the center of the poster to the lower yellow background, a tear in the top border that extends to the lower right corner, a tear in the right border into the black background near the bottom, three tears in the right border into the yellow background by Popeye's hand, pinholes and chips in the borders (airbrushed), chips in the top left near his hat, chips in Popeye's raised hand, and creasing throughout. Fine- on Paper.
