Mickey Mouse Carnival Dance Special Event Poster (Dean's Rag Book, 1930). British Double Crown (20" X 30").
The Dean's Rag Book Company was founded in 1903 by Henry Samuel Dean to launch his brightly colored, printed rag books for children who 'wear their food and eat their clothes.' The company soon diversified, creating teddy bears and dolls, including Mickey Mouse and Minnie Mouse in the 1930s. Also know as Jazzers, these stuffed toys were comical gramophone attachments fitted to the tone arm using a clip, or wire tail which would make Mickey dance around to the music providing a little extra entertainment. This poster advertises a carnival dance at Crayford Town Hall in southeast London, with a drawing of Mickey "compliments of Dean's Rag Book." It also announces "Mickey and Minnie in their Brighter Barnyard Battle," a reference to the 1929 short The Barnyard Battle that perhaps was screened at the event. 1930 was the first year that Disney did product line and licensing of Mickey's image and this must be one of the first uses of the famous mouse's image for that purpose in England. Touchup was applied to pinholes in the background, and a tear under "Carnival." Fine/Very Fine on Linen.
