Felix Calms His Conscience (M.J. Winkler, 1923). One Sheet (27" X 41").The phenomenon of Felix the Cat began in the silent era, and he was the first character from animation to attain a level of popularity large enough to draw in huge movie audiences. He was the co-creation of Pat Sullivan and Otto Messmer, and there is still debate as to which animator came up with the character. His black body, white eyes, and broad grin, combined with the surrealism of the situations in which his cartoons placed him, made Felix one of the most recognized cartoon personalities in film history. In this installment of the Felix adventures, Felix must contend with his rival for Miss Kitty's affections, a low-rent Bowery cat. This stone litho poster, a Heritage first and the earliest Felix cartoon we have ever offered, features a guilty-looking Felix being called out by a finger-pointing tree in the dark of night. This is one of the very few Felix posters produced in full color as most were printed in duotone. The Felix character did not make the transition to sound film as producer Pat Sullivan did not admire the new technology and the character was obsolete by 1929. Artwork by Otto Messmer. This is the only known copy of this delightful artifact of animation history! Light toning can be noted along the edges of borders. Very Fine- on Paper.
