Description

Alice the Lumberjack (FBO, 1926). Fine on Linen. One Sheet (27.25" X 41").
After arriving in Hollywood in 1923, 21-year-old Walt Disney had gone bankrupt, but he met Margaret Winkler, the most important woman in early animation. Winkler was looking for a new animated cartoon series after she lost the rights to the popular Felix the Cat character. She viewed Disney's pilot reel for a new series called "Alice in Wonderland," combining animation and live action, and signed him to a one-year contract. With her help, Disney was on his way to creating a media empire, the genesis of which was the popular Alice Comedies. Each of these cartoon shorts featured a young girl, Alice, entering into a cartoon wonderland, filled with animated characters, including a Felix copycat named Julius and the menacing Pete, who would always attempts to kidnap the young girl. The series was notable for the introduction of expert blending of live action with animation, a process Disney would later perfect with films such as The Three Caballeros and Mary Poppins. Altogether, Disney directed and produced 57 of these shorts, including Alice the Lumberjack, offered here, but very few posters from any of the series are known to have survived. In this installment, Pete tries to kidnap Alice, while she and Julius work as lumberjacks on a river. Interesting to note, the poster utilizes blue ink in the outline of the images, instead of the typical black ink, making this a highly unusual poster. Prior to restoration, it showed minute tears in the top right border, paper lifting on the verso within the center crossfold and lower border, and stains in the center horizontal fold line. The linen has been trimmed to the borders and touchup has been applied to a crease running from the top border into the image, as well as color touchup to Alice's clothing and airbrushing to the borders and interior background.
