Alla Nazimova in Hedda Gabler (1907). Fine+ on Linen. Theater Three Sheet (41" X 81") Sigismund Ivanowski Artwork.
Her talent apparent from a young age, actress Alla Nazimova was one of the most esteemed theatrical actresses of her day both in her native Russia and in America. Of her numerous roles, one could argue her best and most famous was her English language debut as Hedda Tesman from Henrik Ibsen's lauded play, Hedda Gabler. Sigismund Ivanowski, an artist particularly adept at rendering graceful portraits of women, captures both her beauty and subtle emotional expression in this poster from the play. Now professionally restored, this poster no longer displays fold wear and separations, pinholes, small chips in the folds, and a couple of tears. The white borders were trimmed, extending into the outer background along the sides, and the background has been mostly airbrushed. Gorgeous with its lovely stone litho printing, this piece is a wonderful item for theater aficionados.
