DescriptionThe White Hell of Pitz Palu (Universal, 1929). Lobby Cards (2) (11" X 14").
Some posters are better than you might think at first glance. These two scarce lobby cards are certainly evidence of that. This lot contains cards from the G. W. Pabst/Arnold Fanck directed silent epic about a trio trapped on a mountain in a storm. It was the second highest grossing film in Germany in 1929 and was well received in the US, where it was released a year later in a sound version. One card features Dr. Krafft (Gustav Diessl), who has broken his leg and has been tied off to an ice column while Karl Stern (Ernst Peterson), climbs up a sheer ice wall where Maria (Leni Riefenstahl - in an acting role), is waiting to help hoist Krafft up.
Riefenstahl would go on to be one of Germany's most talented film directors during WWII and an important part of the their propaganda machine. The other card features a search airplane piloted by none other than the second ranked World War I Flying Circus ace, Ernst Udet. Only Richthofen himself had more victories than Udet. In World War II, Udet introduced the "dive bomber" to the Luftwaffe. The cards have been cleaned and had only small tack holes in the border and art repaired. Here's a rare opportunity to own a piece of aviation history. Fine+.
