The Rescue (United Artists, 1929). One Sheet (27" X 41").
Based on Joseph Conrad's adventurous novel set on the South Seas, this early talking drama is helmed by noted director Herbert Brenon and stars screen idol Ronald Colman and German born actress Lili Damita in her American debut. Colman had been working in Hollywood for a decade when this film was released, often in heroic swashbuckling roles. A rising star in silent films, with his smooth English speaking voice Colman easily made the transition to talking pictures. This absolutely stunning stone litho one sheet is from his first sound picture, in which he plays adventurer Tom Lingard, who aids a prince and his sister who have been chased from their village. In gorgeous, unrestored color, this striking sheet shows edge wear in three borders, a small tear and a minor pinhole at the center fold, a chip in the right border, and a chip in the lower right corner. There is an extra crease at the top and a few stains in the right border. Early posters of this quality and beauty rarely come available, and the last restored copy we had of this poster sold in our auction in March of 2008 for $35,850. Fine+.
