Description

The Grim Game (Paramount, 1919). Very Fine- on Linen. One Sheet (28" X 41").
This escape-laden thriller starred famous magician and showman Harry Houdini in his first feature film (a year earlier he had appeared in a serial), after which he was inspired to delve deeper into the medium. He reportedly signed a long-term contract with Paramount-Famous Players-Lasky after the release of The Grim Game, but he only made one more film with the studio before moving back to New York to start his own production company and film lab. He independently produced two more films that he also starred in before ending his film career after a total of just five films, because he was dissatisfied with the profits of these lone efforts. The Grim Game recently resurfaced and was restored and screened at the Turner Classic Movies Festival in 2015, joining other surviving materials for the film, including this one sheet offered by Heritage for the first time! Poster material of any kind from any of the five Houdini movies is extremely rare, and any showing him performing magic is even rarer. The poster features Houdini in the midst of the feat he is best remembered for, escaping from a straitjacket. Delicate airbrushing has addressed minor fold separations and small chips or tears.
