Description

Tarzan of the Apes (First National, 1918). Fine/Very Fine. Special Window Card (9" X 22").
Based on Edgar Rice Burroughs' Tarzan of the Apes, this was the very first screen adaptation of the legendary vine swinger starring Elmo Lincoln and Enid Markey (made just four short years after the character first appeared in an issue of a pulp magazine. Elmo Lincoln was the first ever portrayal of Tarzan (actually there is a teen who plays Tarzan as a boy who appears first in the movie, but he doesn't really "count"!). An impressive muscular figure, Lincoln had appeared in several of D.W. Griffith's most important films and took to his role as the Lord of the Jungle with incredible gusto. The picture was such a hit with audiences that Lincoln would later go on to appear in two sequels including the serial The Adventures of Tarzan just two short years after this film's debut. This silent action-adventure is perhaps the most faithful cinematic rendering of Burroughs' novel to date (which makes it vastly different from the decades later MGM Weissmuller version) and original theatre material of any kind from this very first Tarzan adaptation is exceedingly scarce, making this remarkable and rare sized window card a unique find (most window cards of this time were created in a 14" x 22" size but this card was created in a different size, perhaps the only one of this size made). Professional restoration has been applied and includes touchup to the fold on the verso where it was once folded, and there are minor edge wear, and soft creases. There is a tiny top left corner bump and the interior has been skillfully airbrushed.
