Description
Beau Geste (Paramount, 1939). Fine/Very Fine on Linen. Three Sheet (41" X 79.75"). Style B.In over twenty years of poster sales, Heritage Auctions has never offered or encountered another example of this extremely rare three sheet for the Legionnaire adventure. Though the imagery and Art Deco title treatment appear to have been designed by the same artist(s) who devised the rest of the campaign, this poster provides a striking contrast to the other first release paper in that its background color is blue, rather than orange. In the film, three brothers join the French Foreign Legion after a family scandal, facing harsh desert life and internal betrayal at their remote fort. When the fort is attacked, loyalty and honor are tested, revealing the depth of their courage and sacrifice. The film is remembered for its sweeping adventure, strong performances, and stirring depiction of brotherhood. It was a box office hit and helped solidify Gary Cooper's status as a leading action star. Backed to linen, the poster received touchup to misfolds, splits, and chips along the original folds. There was a tear in the bottom border and faint background scuffs. Overall, this large-format piece presents beautifully. Given the extreme scarcity, this may be your only opportunity to add it to your collection. From the Robert and Carla Schenk Collection.
