March falls in love and marries his childhood sweethear, played by Olivia de Havilland, but through a series of unfortunate events, he loses her to Napoleon Bonaparte. This Mervyn LeRoy tearjerker won Gale Sondergaard a Best Supporting Actress Oscar, the first given out by the Academy.
