Description

The Perils of Pauline (Pathe - Eclectic, 1914). Six Sheet (79.5" X 81.5") Episode 18--"The Tragic Plunge."
Never before offered by Heritage and a rarity in the truest sense of the word, we are pleased to present what is thought to be the only remaining copy of this stone litho six sheet from an iconic piece of silent cinema. Known previously only for her appearances in several small, one-reel comedies and dramas, Pearl White's adventures as the harried heiress made her a box office sensation, particularly for the array of dangerous stunts the actress performed herself. Remembered in the public consciousness for its helpless heroine tied to the train tracks and mustachioed villain snickering away in the background, it may come as a surprise to learn that The Perils of Pauline contains none of these famous features. Though certainly a damsel in distress, Pearl White's character escaped quite a few of her hazardous situations through her own brave resourcefulness, was never tied to a train track, and Paul Panzer's villainous Raymond Owen/Koerner was remarkably clean shaven. Instead, this chapter has our heroine take an even more extreme adventure as she escapes a doomed submarine via torpedo tube, one of the nine chapters that have survived the ravages of time and is still viewable today. This fantastic stone litho poster has undergone professional restoration to address fold wear with tears and small chipping, some tears in the interior, and touchup has been applied to the lettering and the black background. The white borders have been partially replaced, although some of the border remains around the poster's edges with the printing information still intact. Fine+ on Linen.
