Description

The Danger Signal (Capital Film Co., 1920). Fine/Very Fine on Linen. Three Sheet (41.25" X 79.75").
This railroad action-drama starred Helen Gibson and was produced by the Capital Film Company, who signed the pioneering stuntwoman and film star after the conclusion of Kalem's long-running serial The Hazards of Helen and a stint with Universal. Though her work as Kalem heroine Helen had ended some years prior, Gibson's stunt work, particularly with trains, was still highly sought after by lower-tier studios and popular with audiences. Capital Film folded a year into her contract, at which point Gibson formed her own production company and attempted to stake out a career as an independent contractor. She sustained injuries in filming in the early 1920s that affected the frequency of her appearances, and after working rodeo shows for several years she returned to a stable career in Hollywood as a stunt double and bit player for the next three decades. This is offered for the first time by Heritage and is likely the only surviving example of this three sheet (and perhaps the only surviving movie paper from this film). It features wonderful stone litho artwork of Gibson holding train robbers at gunpoint from the back of one of the cars. Parts of the borders and folds were airbrushed to address slight fold wear with separations, light chipping in the crossfolds, and staining in the credits area.
