Description

Spartacus (Universal International, 1960). Title Sequence Photo (18" X 23.5").
One of the most important images used in the opening title sequence for Spartacus involved this photo. Image #7 is used as the background for the following superimposed credit, "JOHN GAVIN as JULIUS CAESAR". As Gavin's title fades out, the camera tilts down the blade and then the image is used again as the blade enters the bottom of the frame to form two points. At that point, the title of the film "SPARTACUS" is superimposed. This may be one of the most important original Saul Bass works of art offered on the market. There is still some black masking tape on the image as placed there by the camera department along with camera directions written on the border and image for use by the animation stand operator. There are also portions of a pegboard strip still attached showing that the entire sequence was filmed on an animation stand. The board shows a slight bit of wear to the edges and there is a slight surface abrasion at the bottom of the photo. On the back is another piece of board taped down. Art by Saul Bass. Fine/Very Fine.

The staff at Heritage are amazing to work with. My wife and I were given the "red carpet treatment" from the moment we walked in. We felt safe and secure the moment we arrived.
