    Description

Spartacus (Universal International, 1960). Title Sequence Photo (13.5" X 30").
This is #15 in the series of images for the opening title sequence of Stanley Kubrick's classic film Spartacus. This is a closeup of the statuary of the Roman Emperor Julius Caesar who tried to suppress the revolt of the slaves led by Spartacus. And although it was to be used in the title sequence, for whatever reason, Saul Bass decided to take it out. By the numbering, it would have occurred somewhere in the middle of the sequence where, as it exists now, the Roman text is seen instead. Since this was part of the statuary used only for Stanley Kubrick's credit, Mr. Bass probably decided to remove it from the middle sequence and save the Roman Emperor image solely for Mr. Kubrick. The image still has the black masking tape along the bottom border and within the center of the image as it was placed there prior to filming. The corners have a slight bit of wear and rounding, but otherwise, the image is in great condition. There is a stamp on the verso that reads, "Saul Bass & Assoc., 58 Sunset Blvd., Los Angeles 46, Cal." Art by Saul Bass. Fine/Very Fine.
