Description
Back to God's Country (First National, 1919). One Sheet (28.25" X 41").Canadian-born Nell Shipman, silent film star, producer, writer, and animal trainer, became well known for her portrayals of strong, adventuresome women. Shipman was also the first actress in the world to ever do a full frontal nude scene on film. It was in this 1919 movie Back to God's Country, which coincidentally became the most financially successful silent film ever made in Canada. The tagline in one of the posters for the movie was: "Is the Nude Rude?" On this outstanding stone litho one sheet, Shipman is Dolores LeBeau, a nature loving young woman on a voyage to the Arctic circle with her new husband, Peter Burke (Wheeler Oakman). Light restoration has addressed tears in the borders, one that extends into the credits and two that extend into the background, and the bottom left corner has been replaced. Fine on Linen.
