William Wellman was born to direct this 1927 World War I blockbuster and first Oscar winner for Best Picture, the only silent film to win this most coveted Academy Award. The film had a $2 million budget over and above the military investment of $16 million in supplies and used thousands of soldiers, almost all the existing army pursuit aircraft, and the top rank of military fliers. Wellman created a major film attraction with co-stars Richard Arlen, Buddy Rogers, and the beautiful Clara Bow, and an important small scene with Gary Cooper, which made him a star! These cards of Bow and Rogers have full gloss, with corner bends and bumps, light surface scuffs, light toning, and a fragile crease to the title card at upper right corner.
