Description
Gone with the Wind (MGM, 1939). Original Walter Plunkett/ Scarlett O'Hara Costume Sketch (18" X 23").Producer David O. Selznick's motion picture, Gone With the Wind, is without a doubt one of the greatest films ever made. It would win eight Oscars including Best Picture, Actress, Director and Screenplay and part of the process to make the film as elegant as it was was the art direction. One of the most important aspects of creating the world of Margaret Mitchell's "Old South" was the costumes created by legendary designer Walter Plunkett. Of the 450 costumes produced for the film, Plunkett directly designed 377 of them and to this day, those original designs are among the most sought after collectibles. The majority of those designs are located in archives and museums. The design being offered here is one of those, having been inherited by a family member of Ernest L. Scanlon's secretary. Mr. Scanlon was the chief financial officer at Selznick International Pictures and after the film was completed he gave a few of these designs to her. On the verso there is a "Selznick International Pictures" blue stamp which contains spaces for the character name, scene number and which costume change it was. None of that information is filled out here. There is a possibility that this design was created for a scene either deleted or never filmed yet depicts Scarlett O'Hara played by Vivien Leigh, in a white gown with purple shawl or scarf. On the front, the image has been boldly signed by Walter Plunkett in the lower right. There is a slight water stain in the lower left edge but otherwise, this costume design is in wonderful condition. Examples such as this lot signed by the credited costume designer are outstanding examples of Hollywood history and are assuredly desired by not only costume collectors but by collectors and fans of one the most famous films ever made. Fine/Very Fine.
