Description
Cavalcade (Fox, 1933). Fine+ on Linen. One Sheet (28.25" X 41").Fox's Cavalcade follows two British families (one set of aristocrats led by Oscar-nominee Diane Wynyard and Clive Brook and the other a set of servants led by Una O'Connor and Herbert Mundin) and their experiences from New Year's Eve 1899 to the start of 1933. Director Frank Lloyd, who won the Oscar for his effort, crafts a vastly interesting film that is technologically strong for the time period (the Titanic sequence in particular is something to be appreciated) and very intelligent from the start. Cavalcade was based on the stage production of the same name by Noël Coward. At the time, Coward was coming off the success of Private Lives, a small-scale comedy featuring himself and Gertrude Lawrence. Wanting his next play to be far more epic in scope, he initially eyed the French Revolution before settling on the Second Boer War for inspiration. After a wildly successful West End run that saw King George V and Queen Mary attend, the jump to the silver screen seemed all but certain to succeed. After initial director Frank Borzage had to leave the project due to a scheduling conflict, the veteran Frank Lloyd was brought in, and the resulting film won Best Picture at the 1934 Academy Awards. Posters for this Best Picture winner have always been known to be almost impossible to find and this is only the second time we have ever offered this example in all our years of poster auctions. The Academy's Margaret Herrick Library is known to own one other copy of this beautiful stone litho poster, but we are unaware of any other copies. The poster was mounted to a board but removed completely intact. Restoration has addressed staining to the borders as well into the teal field and the title. Those areas have received airbrush treatment. The left and upper artwork have had little work other than fold touchup. This is a rare opportunity to acquire one of the "Holy Grails" of a complete Academy Award Best Picture winner run.
