Casablanca (Warner Bros., R-1953). Folded, Fine+. Italian Locandina (13" X 27.5") Luigi Martinati Artwork.A gorgeous piece presented for the first time at Heritage, this locandina features one of the best illustrations ever created for one of the best films ever made. Acclaimed Italian poster artist Luigi Martinati truly outdid himself with this stunning depiction of Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman, so well composed with the outline of the eponymous city that the presence of a title is practically superfluous. In fact, one could even argue that the piece outclasses even those from the original Italian release of the film, which were also crafted by Martinati. Ardent collectors may note that is the same fantastic image found on the 2 - fogli for 1953 reissue of the picture, likewise a piece of exceptional scarcity that has only appeared twice on Heritage's auction block. Indications of handling found in this lovely piece include slight fold wear, light creases, and minor tears at the edges. Also present is foxing and a faint tape stain along the fold through the image. Light touchup has been applied to a small tear in Bergman's nose, in addition to minor paper lifts in the corners, all of which, along with the edges of the fold, are braced with small pieces of paper tape on the verso. There is a bit of grease pencil writing on the verso that does not bleedthrough. True fans of the the film will not want to miss out on this exciting opportunity to own such a gem of a poster.
