    Description

    Casablanca (Warner Bros., 1942). Folded, Fine/Very Fine. Insert (14" X 36").
When Warner Bros. released this wartime tale, the studio's expectation was to bring a modest profit similar to the numerous other dramas they turned out year after year. A script had been cobbled together by several writers but was incomplete when production began, and the star was one of the studio's secondary actors who had only recently risen to fame in a new film called The Maltese Falcon. Everything fell perfectly into place, however, with Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman delivering standout performances. A triumph with critics and audiences alike, the movie went on to win Oscars for Best Picture, Director, and Screenplay, and Bogart would receive his first nomination for Best Actor. This scarce insert format is one of the best domestic posters produced for the film's ad campaign and shows such indications of use as fold wear, horizontal creases, small tears, and pinholes, including two in Ingrid Bergman's hair. Some of these issues have been braced with very thin archiving material on the verso. Also present are unobtrusive stains and smudging, but this does not intrude into the excellent and eye-catching image.
