Casablanca (Warner Bros., 1942). Fine on Linen. Locally Produced Canadian One Sheet (27" X 41").
The role of Rick Blaine was initially considered for several actors, including Ronald Reagan and George Raft, before ultimately going to Humphrey Bogart, marking his first romantic lead. Ingrid Bergman, who played Ilsa, was uncertain how to approach her role, as the script withheld the ending until late in production, leaving her unsure whether Ilsa would end up with Rick or her husband. Dooley Wilson, who portrayed Sam and famously sang "As Time Goes By," was actually a drummer and couldn't play the piano; another musician performed off-screen while Wilson mimed. Interestingly, the song was nearly cut from the film, but producer Hal Wallis chose to keep it when reshoots proved too costly, partly because Bergman had already cut her hair short for her next role in For Whom the Bell Tolls. Though originally viewed as a standard studio production rather than a prestige film, Casablanca went on to win the Academy Award for Best Picture and has since become one of the most beloved and quoted films in cinema history. This rare Canadian poster has been backed to linen to address chips to the corners and some edges, splits and tears to the upper portion, including a 6-inch tear above Bogart going down to his forehead, and there is also some smudging.
