    Description

    Ben-Hur (MGM, 1959). Roadshow Three Sheet (41.75" X 83.5") Advance Rainlap Style.
Charlton Heston, fresh off of his biblical performance as Moses in The Ten Commandments, was a natural choice to portray Judah Ben-Hur in this epic remake of the silent classic. And the film didn't disappoint the studio. MGM knew they had a major hit on their hands and so they created this advance three sheet to let people know just how busy they expected the box office to be. The poster clearly requests that patrons reserve their seats in advance. The studio also printed the title in dayglo red to get people's attention and made the poster for outdoor advertising. This poster is an exceptionally rare rainlap design. Essentially, "rainlap" posters are those that have one edge or section unprinted on so that when the sections are joined, the poster image won't be messed up if it gets water on it and the sections begin to re-separate. This is the first example of this poster we've seen. It has two 2.5 inch horizontal tears in it; one just above the film's title across the center vertical fold line and the other just above the lower edge of the art. Other than that and some slight fold separation, the poster is exceptionally clean. Very Fine-.
