    Description

All Quiet on the Western Front (Universal, 1930). French Grande (47" X 63") Advance Style. Joseph Koutachy Artwork.
An exceptionally powerful film, All Quiet on the Western Front is a haunting picture about the horrors and futility of war. Based on the best-selling novel by Erich Maria Remarque, the film was a sensation upon its initial release. During its brief run in Germany - it was banned shortly after its release - members of the Nazi party, upset by the film's anti-war message and its inherent criticism of German militarism, disrupted showings by releasing rats into the theater! It won the Best Picture Oscar in 1930, the first all-talking, non-musical feature to be so honored, and Steven Spielberg acknowledges the film as a partial inspiration for his Saving Private Ryan (1998). Paper from the original release of this landmark picture is exceptionally difficult to come by, and this French grande is making its Heritage debut. The haunting artwork is by Joseph Koutachy. Signs of handling include edge wear, the remnants of a snipe in the bottom border, small paper loss in the top right corner, and pinholes in the borders. Folded, Fine/Very Fine.
