Description

The Bridge on the River Kwai (Columbia, 1958). Three Sheet (41" X 81"). A compelling drama about obsession and madness, this is the based-on-fact story of British Army Colonel Nicholson (Alec Guinness), interned in a Japanese prisoner of war camp, who is ordered to build a bridge for the enemy's use by the camp commander (Sessue Hayakawa). Eventually undertaking the project, Nicholson's desire to show the Japanese that British building methods are the best in the world quickly turns to monomania. Meanwhile, a group of soldiers led by the American commander Shears (William Holden) make plans to destroy the bridge, but first they must get past not only the Japanese, but Nicholson himself. An exceptional achievement, this stunning film picked up an impressive seven Academy Awards, including Best Actor (Guinness), Best Director (David Lean), and Best Picture, as well as a Best Supporting Actor nomination for Hayakawa. The three sheet offered here shows pinholes in the corners, the borders, and the image area, edge wear, and a small censor stamp in the lower left, but is still extremely clean and collectible. Very Fine.
