    Description

    A Day at the Races (MGM, 1937). Insert (14" X 36.5").
The Marx Brothers were already major stars by the time they left Paramount Studios, having conquered Broadway and the silver screen. Two of the funniest pictures of their careers, A Night at the Opera and A Day at the Races, resulted from their move to MGM and association with producer, Irving Thalberg. In this film, the trio star with a young Maureen O'Sullivan, a woman trying to save her medical facility with the help of a veterinarian (Groucho) posing as a doctor with his accomplices (Harpo and Chico). Established Marx Brothers artist, Al Hirschfeld, provides the terrific art for this piece, showcasing playful caricatures of the brothers. Paper from this period in the Marx Brothers' career is highly sought after, and very scarce. The poster has been very well restored to address a few small chips in the borders and a larger chip from the left side extending up to the Hirschfeld rendering of Groucho's right ear and into his hair. There is touch up to the three folds and two tiny chips in the title at the top fold. The white field in the bottom of the poster has been airbrushed as have the borders. The poster is museum hinged to an acid-free backing board and beautifully framed but may be removed to ship if the buyer prefers. Artwork by Al Hirschfeld. Fine on Paper.
