    Description

2001: A Space Odyssey (MGM, 1968). Cinerama Specialty Poster (62" X 29") Robert McCall Artwork.
One of the most significant science fiction films ever produced, this epic saga was based on Arthur C. Clarke's story, The Sentinel. The story of humanity's evolution, with the help of a mysterious black monolith, this film set the standard for virtually all science fiction films to follow, with its top-notch special effects and deeply philosophical storyline. This lot features a rare poster created for use at a larger theater or chain of theaters or to be wild posted in subways and/or at construction sites. No doubt created when the film was showing in it's initial release in Cinerama. The poster is borderless top and bottom. We have never seen nor been offered this very rare poster before and are unaware of another copy and it is not offered in the pressbook. As we now know, there were many specialty posters produced for the film in its initial release. There were two tears from the left side, one into the "1" of "2001" and the other into the "ce" of "Space." There was a detached piece from the lower right corner that has been reattached. Professional restoration has addressed these issues very well. The poster was never folded. Added note: It has been proposed that this poster is a partial piece to the 24 sheet released for the film. The poster is 29" tall whereas a 24 sheet measures approximately 104" tall with this poster being approx. 1/3 the height of the 24 sheet poster, making it proportionally incorrect for a 24 sheet. The poster was never folded, another indicator that this would not be part of a larger poster. We do not agree with this belief that this is part of a larger poster but the buyer should know this has been presented to us. Very Fine- on Linen.
