The Wonderground Map of London Town (The Westminster Press, 1924). Poster (29.5" X 36.75").
Artist MacDonald Gill playfully brings to the page a humorous view of what was the capital of the largest empire the world had ever seen. Originally printed in 1914, the poster showcases a brilliant mix of cartoon and fantasy, and became a massive hit with travelers. So popular was the poster, it was reprinted in several editions, some with slight alterations. We believe the version offered in this lot to be around the time of the 1924 British Empire Exhibition at Wembley, as it features the image of a lion and "On to Wembley" in the top left corner. Backed on linen, the poster has pinholes in the corners, some edge and fold wear with small tears, and pinpoint fold separations. Minor restoration has addressed some of these issues.
