    Description

New York World's Fair 1939 Travel Poster (Grinnell Litho. Co.,1939) Poster (13.5" X 20") Artist: Joseph Binder.
Joseph Binder (1898-1972) was an Austrian lithographer whose artwork was influenced by the De Stijl and Cubism movements. Binder came to USA in 1933 as a teacher, but began making posters. He went on to win many international awards, and created the very future-forward poster for the New York World's Fair in 1939 featuring the famous Trylon and Perisphere. The theme of the fair was "Building The World of Tomorrow," espousing one of the last great ideals of the Machine Age, that science and technology were the vehicles for economic abundance and personal liberty. This message of hope for a better tomorrow struck a chord with fair-goers weary from the ravages of the first World War and the Great Depression. The shiny Big Apple twinkles in the foreground, joined by an illuminated passenger steamship, as searchlights reflect gloriously off of modern architectural wonders, and capture brawny air power in action. A lone bright star in the sky heralds optimism for a new era of advancement and prosperity. Only edge wear and light creasing can be detected. Rolled, Very Fine.
