Description
Mistinguett by Charles Gesmer (Moulin Rouge, 1926). Full-Bleed Poster (30.5" X 47"). Charles Gesmar Artwork.French singer and actress Jeanne Florentine Bourgeois made her debut as "Mistinguett" at the Casino de Paris in 1895, and went on to appear in such celebrated Belle Époque venues as the Folies Bergère, Eldorado, and Moulin Rouge. Her risqué routines captivated Paris, and she became the most popular French entertainer of her time and the highest paid female entertainer in the world, known for her flamboyance and a zest for the theatrical. In 1919 her legs were insured for 500,000 francs. Bourgeois never married, but she had a son with a Brazilian diplomat and a long relationship with Maurice Chevalier, thirteen years her junior. At her death at the age of eighty, writer Jean Cocteau noted that "Her voice, slightly off-key, was that of the Parisian street hawkers --- the husky, trailing voice of the Paris people." Artist Charles Gesmar (1900-1928) was one of the greatest designers of costumes and posters during the golden age of the Paris music hall and renowned for his work for the lovely Mistinguett. This head-turning poster of the "Queen of the Paris Music Hall," is an exceptional example of the talent Gesmar displayed throughout his very short life. Touchup to the folds was the only restoration required. Very Fine- on Linen.
