    Description

Los Angeles International Film Exposition (Filmex, 1976). Signed Poster (18.5" X 58").
The first Los Angeles International Film Exposition (Filmex) was held in November of 1971 at Grauman's Chinese Theatre. It featured the West Coast premiere of The Last Picture Show (Columbia), and was attended by Groucho Marx, Ryan O'Neal, and Andy Warhol among others. By 1976, Filmex had moved to the Plitt Century Plaza Theatres. That year, Alfred Hitchcock drove up in a Universal tour bus for the premiere of his Family Plot on Opening Night, and a Cowboy Film Marathon was held (48 films!) at which George Stevens, Jr. spoke about his father's film Shane. To promote that '76 festival, prolific poster artist John Alvin created a wonderfully nostalgic image featuring "Blanche," a leggy, twinkly-eyed usher selling 5¢ peanuts, popcorn, and candy. Alvin described his role as an artist as "Creating the promise of a great experience," and with this exquisite Filmex poster, he did just that. The piece shows very minor signs of handling, including left and right edge wear, and tape on the verso near the top. The poster is signed "John Alvin," and includes a certificate of authenticity from The John Alvin Estate. Rolled, Very Fine. From the estate of John Alvin.
