Janet Gaynor by Modest Stein (Modest Stein, 1931). Unsigned Pastel Original Artwork on Board (16.5' X 12") (Framed Under Glass, 27.5" X 23"). Miscellaneous.Modest Stein was a fascinating and talented artist. His biography reads like a first rate novel, from his passionate anarchistic days in the 1890s trying to blow up infamous industrialist Henry Clay Frick with Stein sporting pockets of real dynamite, to his amazing pulp cover work for Doc Savage, to his beautiful renditions of Hollywood stars for Picture Play Magazine from 1929 throughout the 1930s. His rendering here is of an impish, sideways glancing, Janet Gaynor, and was done for the Picture Play cover of April, 1931. There is some light foxing on the face, and small pigment loss in the lower right corner. Please see full-color, enlargeable image below for more details. Fine/Very Fine.
