    Description

French Propaganda Poster (1900). French Affiche (39" X 55") "Le Petit Sou."
Swiss artist Theophile Alexandre Steinlen (1859-1923) relocated to the bohemian Montmartre section of Paris during the heady days of the Belle Époque where he created over four hundred Art Nouveau illustrations for local magazines, as well as advertisements and stylized nightclub posters, which often featured the cats that he loved. This moving stone litho piece was created by Steinlen to advertise the newspaper, "Le Petit Sou," the Journal of Social Defense. Lady Liberty leads workers towards the Sacre Coeur church, in a symbolic storming of "the new Bastille." Printed more than a century ago, this poster is in remarkable condition. Touchup was only needed to address edge wear, pinholes at the top right, and a tear at the top and bottom right. Printer: Charle Veneau, Paris. Fine- on Linen.
