    Description

    EUROPE (White Star Line-Olympic/Titanic) (c.1912). Travel Poster (27.5" X 41.25"). Artist: Fred J. Hoetz.
This poster, with fabulous art by Fred J. Hoetz, is a major Titanic artifact, and was created to promote White Star's Olympic class of ships. The latter was the first of three (the others were Titanic and Gigantic, changed to Britannic after the unfortunate incident of April,1912.) The few times this poster has surfaced (so to speak), it has caused a raging controversy among Titanic buffs. As traditional in "of the line" posters, the ship pictured is often a composite of several sister ships. In this case, the most tell tale difference between the Titanic and Olympic, the closed A deck on the former and the open A deck on the latter, are not clearly defined, perhaps on purpose. Even more frustrating is the number of life boats pictured: they are twice the number either the Olympic or Titanic carried. This would tend to lend some weight to those who argue that the poster was created after the sinking of the Titanic. Intriguingly, the date on the reverse of the original of the photo displayed (which is an image included for illustrative purposes and not part of the lot) has the notation 1912. There's little doubt that Titanic collectors, buffs and historians will continue arguing about this for a long time to come . It's one more of the many mysteries that rose from the sea bottom when the Unsinkable Titanic met her fate. The International Mercantile Marine Line was a cartel of five ship lines: The American Line, The Leyland Line, The Red Star Line, The White Star Line and the White Star Dominion Line. IMML was created by J. Pierpont Morgan to pose a challenge to the Cunard Line. This wonderful poster was trimmed on both the right and left side by a couple of inches and of the top and bottom border. There was some wrinkling and tearing within the image as the poster which was previously mounted to another surface. Professional restoration and some color enhancement has restored this very rare poster so it displays beautifully. Very Good on Linen.
