Description
The Raven (Universal, 1935). Half Sheet (22" X 28") Style B. From the New Zealand collection comes one of the true gems of horror collecting. This half sheet from Boris Karloff and Bela Lugosi's "The Raven" is nothing short of spectacular. After the incredible success of 1934's "The Black Cat," Carl Laemmle brought the kings of horror together for another adaptation of an Edgar Allan Poe tale of terror. This film had as many creepy obsessions as the prior film had, complete with torture chambers; one wonders how the film made it past the censors at the Hays Commission. In this outing, Lugosi was the villain while Karloff is the sympathetic gangster carved up by the diabolical surgeon. As far as we know, this is one of four copies of this poster in existence. The poster has a vertical and horizontal fold with extremely minor color touch to a couple of color flakes on the fold line and to a pinhole in each corner. There are four additional pinholes in the borders. The colors on this half sheet are so bold and vibrant that they are literally as fresh as the day they were printed and the folds are not at all distracting.
