The Man Who Laughs (Universal, 1929). Fine+ on Linen. Autographed German Poster (37.25" X 55.75") Dori Artwork.
After the wild success of such horror tragedies as The Hunchback of Notre Dame and The Phantom of the Opera, Universal studios was on the hunt for new movie material. Of course, Victor Hugo's macabre novel, The Man Who Laughs, quickly rose to the top of producer Carl Laemmle's list. With a sympathetic yet gruesome storyline, the plot was a perfect continuation of the studio's successful trend. Laemmle picked up German auteur Paul Leni to direct the affair, who had an experienced hand at the the emerging horror genre with such entries as Waxworks and The Cat and the Canary. Leni then selected the immensely talented Conrad Veidt to headline as Hugo's disfigured protagonist, Gwynplaine. He was a good fit for the role, as he had already gained international fame as the first horror star for his role as Cesare the Somnambulist in The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari. The ever lovely Mary Philbin, who has signed and inscribed this incredible poster, took on the role of the the blind Dea for the picture. A first time offering from Heritage, this beautiful German poster features a gorgeous stone litho portrait of the two stars. It looks lovely after being professionally restored, once showing edge and fold wear, some fold separations, and a few minor tears. There was also a tear in Mary Philbin's chin and mouth that has been well addressed, and there were slight touchups to her face. The poster had some chips in the borders, and the borders have been airbrushed. Still visible is a signed government censorship stamp in the right background. Philbin has written, "To Mike, My sincere Best Wishes, Love always, Mary Philbin." Fine+ on Linen.
