    Description

King Kong (RKO, 1933). French Four Panel (124" X 93").
Posters for King Kong, one of cinema's finest triumphs, always create quite a stir at auction, especially those that almost never surface, like this mind-blowing large French four panel. A collector's dream, the piece makes its much anticipated Heritage debut in the 2014 November Signature Auction. True to his larger-than-life persona, Merian C. Cooper -- war hero, explorer, and cinematic pioneer -- conceived and delivered a creature so imposing, captivating and unforgettable as King Kong, "The Eighth Wonder of the World." Inestimable is the impact of this picture, and its trailblazing effect on how films have been made ever since. After premiering in New York City at the Radio City Music Hall in March 1933, it began doing all-time record box office business. Kong was then released internationally to another tremendous reception, resulting in an incredible assemblage of posters being produced for its promotion, including this large format French piece. Artist C. Finel of the GB Hess workshop perfectly conjured the mighty beast mid-rage -- mouth gaping, incisors gleaming, savage-eyed -- with a distressed, but sylph-like Fay Wray enveloped in his meaty clutch. Printed 80+ years ago, this poster is in phenomenal condition, and needed very little restoration. It has been linenbacked and light touchup was applied to the folds. Faint stains are slightly perceptible in the bottom right corner, as is some toning along the folds in the borders, and minor creasing in the background to the right of Kong's head. With colors that pop like they were printed yesterday, this elusive poster will be the pride of one highly astute collector! Very Fine on Linen.
