Frankenstein (Universal, 1931). Very Fine. Lobby Card (11" X 14").
After the success of Dracula in February 1931, Carl Laemmle was convinced that the horror genre would not only succeed, but also bring fame and fortune to his studio. Bela Lugosi, fresh off of his breakout debut as the vampiric count, initially agreed to take on the role of the Monster, but backed out before filming as the character had no lines. And so the search was on for a replacement. The director, James Whale, spotted Boris Karloff at the studio and immediately named him as the director's preferred candidate for the part. The actor's tall and gaunt appearance was exactly what Whale envisioned for the legendary creature and it fell upon famed makeup artist Jack Pierce to create the monster's makeup. The design underwent a few tests and revisions before filming started, but the image used on this lobby card is from the test shot just before Pierce finalized the Monster's makeup. The only difference between the final look and the image on this montage card are the prominent bolts on the forehead. On the left side of the montage are the leads John Boles and Mae Clarke, while the image on the right features Colin Clive as Dr. Henry Frankenstein declaring to his mentor Dr. Waldman (Edward Van Sloan), that with these hands, only he can create life. In great shape, especially considering its age, this card looks fantastic after light touchup to a couple of corner bends, pinholes, and a small tear at the top. Some of these issues are still visible, as are slight unaddressed creases and soft surface scuffs. Without a doubt, other than the title card from the film, this is one of the most important horror lobby cards ever created.
