Black Zoo (Allied Artists, 1963). Original Gouache French Poster Artwork on Illustration Board (22.5" X 29.75).
It was "high-camp" horror at its best as British actor Michael Gough hissed and scratched his way through this tale of a zoo keeper (Gough) who unleashed his cast of large cats on anyone he disliked. The film was released during the height of the horror film cycle started by Hammer Films and AIP and the poster campaign told viewers exactly what they were going to see. This original painting, based on the art campaign created for the American posters, was made in France and used on the French grande. It certainly has a bit more detail than its American counterpart with darker colors and meaner cats. Unfortunately, the painting is not signed and the artist remains unknown. It has slight edge wear, soft surface scuffs, and a few bumps to the corners. It shows mild foxing and has some surface paper loss, but none of this detracts from the beautiful work of art it is. Fine/Very Fine on Illustration Board.

    Estimate: $1,000 - $2,000.
