Over the last decade and a half, the Alternative Movie Poster has emerged as a cutting-edge collectible with a rapidly growing base of artists, fans, galleries and now auctions. Many modern collectors have discovered that the alternative images on these posters are vastly superior to the traditional images created by the film studios to promote their films. Part pop culture and part fine art, these high quality, limited-edition prints feature the art of some of the most renowned commercial and comic art illustrators working today. Drew Struzan, Bill Sienkiewicz, Laurent Durieux, Tyler Stout, Ken Taylor, Mark "Jock" Simpson, Olly Moss, and many others have become iconic names within the Alternative Movie Poster (AMP) movement. Adding to the posters' desirability is the fact that they tend to be signed by their artists and are limited to small print runs, numbering from a scant handful of copies to a few hundred prints at most, each a work of art in both design and skilled production. Though Alternative Movie Posters originated as a series of humble online offerings for a niche audience, the medium has continued to gain greater and greater prestige among collectors. New prints will sell out of stock within mere minutes online, while some have their own special debuts at the Mondo Gallery in Austin, San Francisco's Spoke Art Gallery, and such famed events as the San Diego and New York City Comic Cons. Ultimately, these stunning prints are becoming coveted items among movie fans and are sure to play a greater part in the future of the collecting hobby.
Canadian MATT RYAN TOBIN takes much of his influence from the horror films he grew up on and loves to create new movie posters within that genre. His posters have a flair for the macabre with their dark designs. Before starting each new project, he immerses himself in the film, listening to the score and finding inspiration. Without a doubt, he is now one of the masters of the AMP movement.
This unused and spectacular limited edition print has been signed by Tobin in blue pencil and numbered in pencil; both in the lower right.
