    Thirty-Nine Steps and Secret Agent (Gaumont, 1935-1936). Exhibitor Ads (2) (12.75" X 15.75").
39 Steps was one of director Alfred Hitchcock's first major international successes, and featured Robert Donat as Richard Hannay, an innocent bystander to the murder of a secret agent. The beautiful Madeleine Carroll plays Pamela, who reluctantly is trapped into helping Hannay. Hitchcock followed the success of 39 Steps with Secret Agent, an adaptation of a Somerset Maugham story, Ashenden, credited to Charles Bennett. Carroll returns as the leading lady and John Gielgud and Peter Lorre co-star. This unique lot includes two stunning double-sided, country-of-origin exhibitor ads from these films, filled with beautiful portraits in gorgeous color. The Secret Agent piece features Carroll on one side and Lorre on the verso, and the Thirty-Nine Steps piece has a portrait of Donat and Carroll on one side and a drawing of the pair on the verso. Printed on a lovely cream colored linen stock, these ads were most likely included in a deluxe set of full-color ads done by the studio British Gaumont for the the season of 1935-36 and are in excellent condition, showing only very minor signs of handling, such as a light stain near the top edge, and small corner bumps. Very Fine.
