Description
Rear Window (Paramount, 1954). One Sheet (27" X 41").Confined to a wheelchair after breaking his leg, photojournalist L.B. Jeffries (James Stewart) becomes his apartment building's resident voyeur. Armed with his binoculars, Jeffries gazes in on his neighbors and becomes particularly obsessed with the activities of traveling salesman Lars Thorwald (Raymond Burr), who he begins to believe murdered his wife. Alfred Hitchcock treated the subject of voyeurism in many of his films -- whether it's Stewart following Kim Novak or Anthony Perkins watching Janet Leigh in her motel room -- but never so explicitly as in this film. Stewart could easily be a stand-in for Hitchcock, both of whose jobs require observational skills, both of whom see the darker aspects of human nature. He is also a surrogate for members of the film-going audience. As he sits in his chair, events unfold in front of him, with the window acting as a screen, an intermediary that allows him to view his neighbors as characters, acting for his entertainment. The situations escalate into suicide and murder, until he must ask himself to what extent the drama is only playing out in his own mind; but even when he decides to get involved, he never (voluntarily) leaves his chair. Touchup has been applied to the folds, pinholes in the corners, and small chips in the center horizontal fold. Fine/Very Fine on Linen.
