The Conformist by Piero Ermanno Iaia (Paramount, 1971). Original Acrylic Poster Art Painting on Board (14" X 20") & Italian 2-Fogli (39.25" X 55").
A renowned Italian artist with a prolific body of work spanning from the early sixties to the late eighties, Piero Ermanno Iaia illustrated book covers, television advertisements, articles in Playboy, and, most famously, a veritable slew of movie posters. Rather than sticking to just one style for the majority of his career, Iaia preferred to explore through a variety of different mediums, becoming equally comfortable using either a traditional painterly composition with a flurry of bright brushstrokes as seen in The Trial, or a complicated and eye-catching collage made with modern screen printing found in his memorable image for Billy Jack. One of the most popular of his many film posters through the years has been this dramatic illustration of Bernardo Bertolucci's wartime drama The Conformist, and rightfully so. Iaia's skillful use of rough brushwork with an overlay of penciled crosshatching make for a fitting counterpart to the film's complicated protagonist as he shifts from scene to scene in his futile search for normalcy. This beautiful country of origin illustration shows only the most minimal signs of wear with minor corner bumps, slight corner bends in the upper corners, and a rounded bottom right corner. There appears to be some possible light touchup to pinholes in the corners. The accompanying 2-fogli is in lesser condition, as you can see in the photo, and does not at all detract from the grade of this remarkable painting. Very Fine.
