    Description

    Rashomon (Daiei, 1951). Japanese B2 (20" X 28.5") Awards Style.
We rarely get the opportunity to sell any paper from this Akira Kurosawa classic, and this is only our second time to offer up an original country of origin poster for this terrific title, this being the first for this style. One of the most significant films in the history of Japanese cinema, this was director Kurosawa's tale of a heinous crime by a roving bandit. The story is told largely in flashback by a woodcutter who witnessed the event, the bandit, the raped wife of a samurai, and, by way of a medium, the murdered samurai himself. All four tell different stories, leading to a compelling exploration of the meaning of truth. The film has had such an impact that our legal system actually recognizes "The Rashomon Effect" in relation to eyewitness testimony. This extremely rare poster, created after the film won the 1951 Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film, was made in Japan for use perhaps in bigger cities thus the mixing of English and Kanji titles. There has been touchup applied to a couple of tears in the credit area, the upper left background, and to the upper edge and text. There is a bit of touchup in the faces, and a smudge in the award logo. Fine/Very Fine on Linen.
