    Description

Mädchen in Uniform (GFFA, 1931). French Grande (47" X 63") Carlo Mariani Artwork.
Made at a time when the Weimar Republic was transitioning to the fascism of Nazi Germany, this landmark film is a searing examination of a young teenage girl's sexual awakening in the world of an authoritarian all-girl's boarding school. Manuela (Hertha Thiele), the 14-year-old daughter of a Prussian soldier, is sent to the school when her mother dies. The harsh realities of her new life are eased somewhat by the realization that her growing feelings for her kind teacher, Fraulein von Bernburg (Dorothea Wieck), are mutual. It is sheer bliss until, in a drunken moment, Manuela confesses her love to the entire school. Of course, Nazi Germany tried, unsuccessfully, to burn every copy of the film dealing with lesbianism. However, it was also banned in the U.S., until Eleanor Roosevelt recognized the value of its complex themes and spoke out in the film's favor. This original release grande is the only known copy. It has pinholes in the borders, missing paper on the lower border, and a chip in the "o" of "Uniforme." There is touchup on the folds and on Wieck's face. These issues have been addressed with professional restoration. The beautiful artwork of Wieck and Thiele is by Carlo Mariani. Very Fine- on Linen.
