    Description

Les Abysses by Jean Mascii (Kanawha, 1963). Signed Original French Gouache Poster Artwork on Illustration Board (19"" X 25.5").
Based on the true story of the Papin sisters, this fictional film recounts the story of two sisters who work as maids to an elite family composed of a man, wife and daughter. When they feel they are taken advantage of, the two sisters murder the wife and daughter by gouging out their eyes and beating them to death. The sisters are also alleged to have been lesbians. The events were so shocking that when it came to trial in 1933, it captured the fascination of the entire French country. Greek director Nikos Papatakis changed little of the known events and his filmed version of the tale was shown at the 1963 Cannes Film Festival where it was nominated for the palm d'or. It was considered a work of art in the surreal genre of film making but was so shocking at the time, it did not get a large release. The poster by artist Jean Mascii provides a surreal and haunting graphic of the two sisters, tortured and in love, looming over their future victims. Signs of usage include light edge wear, slight corner bumps, soft surface scuffs, and a surface lift at the top edge. There are some thin stains in the title area. This is one of Mascii's best works, inspired and brilliant in it's greenish colors. The notes next to his signature suggest it was created only for use on the French Grande. Very Fine- on Illustration Board.
