    Description

Histoire d'un Crime by George Méliès (Star-Film, 1906). Very Fine-. Original Mixed Media Set Rendering on Paper (13" X 9").
Making its debut appearance at Heritage, this set rendering by celebrated auteur George Méliès is a unique piece in not only its condition and age, but also its medium. As skilled with a pen or pencil on paper as he was behind a camera, most of Méliès surviving concept artwork tends to be monochrome pieces done in graphite or ink. However, this rendering is one of the director's rarer works in color, created with moonlit shades of blue, yellow, and brown. Likewise, the film itself comes from an unusual era within Méliès' career, who found his greatest success with his fanciful tales and imaginative productions. This picture marks his attempt at a more dramatic and contemporary story, reportedly based off of a real case of robbery and fatal arson. The setting pictured here comes from one of two ending scenes that theaters could opt to not have in their cut, as some feared that the faux execution might be considered too realistic and shocking for some audience members. Though not signed by the director, the drawing is very similar in its detailed linework and use of perspective to pieces attributed to Méliès that were acquired for the AMPAS production art collection, and so we at Heritage believe it to indeed be created by Méliès. Both grim and beautiful, this rendering shows such indications of handling as light creases, very minor tears, a minute chip, and a few unobtrusive stains. The edges also show some wear and the corners have been clipped, however these may be due to the production process. There are paper lifts and remnants on the verso, none of which are visible from the front. As a special added note, the verso has a collector's stamp for Georges Maurice Huisman, who was once, the Secretary General of France, mayor of Valmondois, and the first ever president of the Cannes Film Festival.
