    Description

    Hamlet (Art-Film, 1921). German Horizontal Style One Sheet (28" X 37").
This early 1920s German film had an inspired performance by Danish silent movie-star Asta Nielsen, who formed her own production company (the Art-Film on the poster) to star as a female Hamlet. British scientist Edward P. Vining had proffered a theory that the Danish prince was an androgyny princess, but it really wasn't a new theory, brilliant British actress Sarah Siddons played a female Hamlet on the stage in the eighteenth century for over thirty years. Eleanor Duse, Eva la Gallienne, and the legendary Sarah Bernhardt, are just a few who tackled the role. Nielsen's performance is startlingly modern and realistic, a far cry from the stereotypical silent film herky-jerky approach by less skilled artisans. The magnificent poster is in total harmony with her subtle and haunted rendition of the Hamlet persona. The linenbacking is top rate, and there has been minimal restoration for just minor crossfold separation, some top and bottom border edge wear, and a few border pinholes. Don't let this important poster elude you. Fine/Very Fine on Linen.
