The Maltese Falcon (Warner Bros., 1945). Folded, Fine/Very Fine. First Post-War Italian Foglio (39" X 27") Sergio Gargiulo Artwork.
The word rare seems to be used a lot in collectible hobbies and to collectors, generally means a very uncommon or very scarce commodity. I believe the poster offered here is the true meaning of rare. One of two or three copies known to exist, it is the definition of rare. After the Second World War, paper was a very scarce material in Italy, and this poster was produced only in this smaller single foglio or one sheet size. There are no known photobustas nor larger posters for this title. We believe they were not made due to the shortage of paper. What is unusual is that the poster was produced in a horizontal attitude. Why, as most folios like the U.S. one sheet, was this poster printed in the vertical perspective? I suggest it may be the artwork that led to this unusual choice. The magnificent Gargiulo artwork is stunning, and we've never seen an image of this poster previously. Starring Humphrey Bogart as the tough as nails Sam Spade, John Huston created a masterpiece that has withstood the test of time in his directorial effort. The poster is folded and is somewhat brittle due to age. It has some fold separation and border chipping, some of which has been supported with archival tissue tape on the verso. This would be an outstanding candidate for preservation.
