Description

The Lady from Shanghai (Columbia, 1947). One Sheet (27" X 41").
Met with immediate success in Europe and now considered to be one of the top film noir classics, it's hard to imagine this exciting drama of lust, betrayal, and a drop-dead femme fatale as the flop it was among American audiences and critics alike. Rita Hayworth and Orson Welles give excellent performances as they fluctuate from sizzling seduction to cold-blooded murder, a dynamic suspected to stem from their struggling real-life marriage and impending divorce. The film also possesses some stunning cinematography, now especially famous for its ingenious "Hall of Mirrors" scene, a segment that fuels both the thrilling action on screen and fully reveals the complex web of lies spun throughout Welles' chilling narrative. Along with its status as one of the greatest examples of noir in its highest form, The Lady from Shanghai also boasts one of the best and most sought after illustrations in the genre. This sultry one sheet has undergone restoration to address a torn pinhole above the title, a lower vertical misfold, and applied touchup to the borders. Still visible are pinholes in the outer background, a horizontal crease in the bottom border, mild smudges in the upper and bottom borders, light staining in the bottom border and a minor post-restoration tear in the upper border. Fine/Very Fine on Paper.
